One very unfortunate side of the internet are Trojan's and Virus's, these have become the biggest single menace to your computer. They come in all manor of different shapes and sizes and each one has its own agenda.To the right of this text, you will see the latest virus information from one of the leading anti-virus software firms Sopos, it shows the 3 different risk levels and what you need to be looking out for. Virus' can infect your computer in a number of differ ant ways, the two most common ways are :-

downloading from peer-to-peer sites. (e.g... kazza, emule, edonkey)

most anti-virus software nowadays will automatically scan ALL incoming emails and downloaded files before allowing them to be opened, or saved to your hard-drive. This is why it is very important to keep your anti-virus software up to date at all times.

Anti virus software is the absolute one thing you must keep updated and running at all times on your pc, virus programmers are constantly trying to find new ways to infect pc's and having out of date anti virus software is the easiest way off allowing it to happen.

I personally used to use Norton, but became disheartened with it after trying antivir which was free and you would have thought not as powerful, but turned out to be more powerful and better equipped to detect virus's and also also a lot of other potentially bad things attempting to infect my pc. The only downside with antivir is its old style interface but if your looking for a good reliable free anti virus program, then this is the one for you.

There is no excuse for connecting to the internet without having a firewall installed, Windows XP now comes with one built in, its ok, but not that good, but will allow you to get online and order / buy / download a better one.

Spy ware

Spy ware is a pretty recent development in the home computer market, this is generally not out to destroy any of your valuable files, but to mainly track what you do on your pc and report back to some company when then sell the information of other companies.

Although its not malicious in nature, it can after a while start to effect the sped and efficiency of your computer, and just like the virus & trojan removal software, there are also many packages that will remove spy ware from your pc.

The one we would recommend is Adware SE by Lavasoft.

Other Useful Software

A Utility to Backup Outlook Express: Creates a backup copy of email messages, attachments, address book, list of blocked senders, identities, accounts, message rules, and signatures. I once tried to do this by hand and did manage it but it took quite some time. I tried this program and it did the same job in seconds, even allowing me to select individual accounts.

Mozilla Firefox (Browser): This is a fully featured web-browsers which has sprung up from the ashes of what was Netscape, the browser is under constant development and improvement and has a massive selection of add-ons and skins available.

Mozilla Thunderbird (email Client): This is a fully featured web-browsers which has sprung up from the ashes of what was Netscape, the browser is under constant development and improvement and has a massive selection of add-ons and skins available.

MozBackup (backup Utility for Above): Allows you to make backups of all your ThunderBird & Firefox settings and restore them at a later date or on a other computer. (includes: all email account settings, emails, attachments, browser settings, favorites, passwords etc).

OpenOffice.org 2.0 If you cannot afford the expensive MicroSoft office system, then this is just the thing for you. Price wise you cannot beat it as it costs nothing and as for functionality its has microsoft by the throat and even betters it in some departments. We would recommend downloading and installing this software you will be quite suprised just how good it is.
